Programme 2012

Shrewsbury Welsh Society
(Cymdeithas Gymraeg Amwythig)

Cymdeithas Gymraeg Amwythig (Shrewsbury Welsh Society) was formed in 1934 by a group of young Welsh people who had moved into the town to pursue their careers. They realised that there was no meeting place for young people who had moved here, so formed a Club on Dogpole where they could socialise and converse with their fellow countrymen in welsh.

The Society is still going strong today and now meet fortnightly from September to May in the Swan Hill Lecture Room (adjacent to the Congregational Church) Shrewsbury.

Meetings are held entirely in Welsh and consist of lectures talks and musical evenings and visits from eminent Welsh people. The Society also has close ties with other Welsh Societies such as Ludlow, Telford , Wolverhampton, Oswestry and Welshpool. Events are held at their venues and we join in on exchange visits.

The full programme for the year appears under ‘programme’ on or website but undoubtedly the highlight of our year is the St David’s Day Concert which is to be held in Theatre Severn. The 25th February 2012 concert features one of the Choirs from Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion, an innovative music school based in the picturesque Teifi Valley and now established at the forefront of the youth choral movement. The Musical Director is Islwyn Evans and the Accommpanist Stephen Pilkington. The Concert will be compéred by journalist and broadcaster Beti George who is one of the leading presenters on BBC Welsh T.V. and Radio Cymru .The Cymdeithas Gymraeg is donating the proceeds of this Concert to Macmillan Nurses who benefit so many patients with their support at home and at the Hospice. In 2011 with the help of Barclays Bank, who sponsor the Concerts, the Society donated £4000.00 to local charities . We hope to raise a similar amount in 2012
